Why Winterizing Your Dock is a Must

Leaving a dock to fend for itself during the cold season can lead to some pretty expensive structural damage. Whether you have a floating dock, a pipe dock, or a boat lift, proper winter prep, dock maintenance and storage are crucial to:

  • Preventing damage from moving ice sheets.
  • Stopping "ice jacking" (lifting) of fixed structures.
  • Extending the life of your floats and accessories.
  • Ensuring a fast, safe setup as soon as the nice weather returns.

Floating Dock Winterization

Floating docks are especially vulnerable to the elements. Unlike fixed structures, they have to deal with lateral ice pressure and significant water level changes. If they aren't prepped right, you risk cracked floats or a dock that’s drifted halfway across the lake by March. You could end up needing a major floating dock repair or worse.

Our specialized service includes:

  • Detailed Inspection: We check for watertight floats and wear and tear on the hinges.
  • Accessory Removal: We put away removable gear and secure electrical systems against the frost.
  • Anchor Management: We adjust chains for the ice or mark locations with buoys for an easy dock installation next spring.
  • Water Removal: We provide a full dock removal service, moving your setup to dry land or sheltered to an "ice-safe" zone.
  • Final Securing: We block the dock up for airflow and protect the wood surfaces

Winter Prep for Standing Docks

Pipe docks are loved for their stability,  but they face a major enemy: the freeze-thaw cycle. To stop the ice from grabbing your structure and twisting the frame, you need to act before the lake freezes solid.

Our experts take care of:

  • Section Removal: Taking out wood, composite, or aluminum panels to reduce wind and ice resistance.
  • Lightening the Load: Removing extra weight to minimize stress on the support legs.
  • Integrity Checks: A close look at supports and welds to catch any need for residential dock repairs early.
  • Post Protection: Expert advice and solutions to keep your supports from getting "trapped" in the ice.

Storing & Protecting Boat and PWC Lifts

A boat lift is a major investment with sensitive mechanical parts. Leaving it in the water or poorly positioned over the winter can lead to premature rust, frayed cables, or motor failure.

Our protection process includes:

  • Professional Removal: Using specialized gear to get the lift out of the water and out of reach of the ice.
  • Cable & Pulley Inspection: Checking for wear to prevent a snap during your first launch next year.
  • Preventative Greasing : Applying protective lubricants to moving parts to fight off winter moisture.
  • System Security: Locking down moving components to prevent damage from winter storms.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • When should I winterize my dock?

Ideally, you want it done before the first ground frost, usually between late September and late November  in Quebec and Ontario, depending on your specific area.

  • How do you winterize a floating dock?

It depends on the body of water. On some very calm lakes, a dock can stay in with de-icers (bubblers), but in most cases, it’s best to pull it out or move it to a protected bay.

  • How much does dock winterization cost?

The price depends on the size of the dock, the type of structure, and how easy it is to access your shoreline. Contact us for a free, no-obligation quote!
